Perhaps no one has discovered the benefits of honey as deeply as the Indians. Honey was considered as nature’s gift to mankind and recommended as a special ingredient in every kitchen. It was seen as an important part of the diet for people over 12 months of age. Honey is considered a predigested food and is said to be easily digested by humans. One of the uses of honey in both Ayurveda and Siddha is as a vehicle for medicines. When mixed with honey, the drugs are easily and quickly absorbed by the body and they spread throughout the system through the blood circulation. Honey is also said to preserve the potency of medicine and prolong its effectiveness.
Siddha texts (translated as heat) prescribe honey as part of treatment for heat-related problems, excessive breathing, vomiting, gas problems, and blood impurities. Seven different types of honey are identified in the Siddha texts, with the honey obtained from the dense mountain jungles known as malithan or hill honey believed to have the highest medicinal value. This type of honey is said to have the properties of many medicinal plants from which bees collect nectar.

- Honey is good for your blood

Early research has shown positive effects of honey on hypertension or high blood pressure. Honey is also traditionally used to reduce the effects of hypotension or low blood pressure.
There is some preliminary evidence that honey may reduce white blood cell (WBC) levels in chemotherapy patients. In a small-scale trial, 40% of patients at risk for low WBC counts did not have a recurrence of the problem after drinking two teaspoons of therapeutic honey daily during chemotherapy.

Except for one patient, all others showed improvement in their wounds. Additionally, infected wounds became sterile within a week of applying honey.

Clinical research has also shown that medical grade honey can kill foodborne illnesses such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella. Honey has also shown promise in fighting bacterial strains that have developed resistance to antibiotics. Research shows that honey is effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Honey combats infection on several levels making it difficult for bacteria to develop resistance to it. Antibiotics, in contrast, usually target bacteria while they are growing and give them a chance to develop resistance. It has been observed that honey, also known as quorum sensing, disrupts the bacteria that cause disease and allows antibiotics to take effect.

One of the important uses of honey in traditional medicine is as an instant energy booster. As indicated above, honey contains various types of sugar molecules, especially glucose and fructose. However, unlike white sugar, where fructose and glucose are combined as sucrose and require an additional step in the digestion process, in honey, these two sugars are separate. Thus glucose acts as an instant energy source.
The United States National Honey Board recommends the consumption of honey because it contains many vitamins and minerals. A list of these is: niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

Honey helps reduce constipation, bloating and gas thanks to its mild laxative effect. Honey contains probiotic or “friendly” bacteria, such as bifido bacteria and lactobacilli, which aid digestion, promote immune system health, and reduce allergies. Using honey in place of table sugar has reduced the intestinal toxic effects of mycotoxins produced by fungi.
- Honey combats skin and scalp infections
Honey also has many health benefits on the skin and scalp. A small-scale study with 30 patients looking at the effect of honey on the healing of seborrheic dermatitis and scabies had participants gently rub raw honey into their problem areas for 2-3 minutes at a time. The honey was left for three hours before being washed off with warm water. All patients showed improvement with treatment. The itching was relieved and the scales disappeared within a week, while the lesions disappeared within two weeks. Patients’ hair loss conditions also improved. Additionally, patients who continued treatment with honey once a week for six months did not relapse.

Ginger honey drink
Boil-1
- Mash the ginger and mash it to extract its juice. Keep the juice in a glass container for 15 minutes.
- Store the pure juice in the refrigerator for 5-6 days, discarding the ginger pods.
- Mix this with 2 teaspoons of ginger juice and 2 teaspoons of honey and take it every morning on an empty stomach. This helps in purifying the blood. It can be taken once every 6 months for 48 days.
Boil-2
- Wash and peel fresh ginger.
- Cut ginger into small pieces and soak it in honey in a wide mouthed glass bottle.
- Cover the mouth of the bottle with a thin, white, cotton cloth and keep it in the sun for 12 days.
- Take 2-4 pieces daily morning and evening to relieve any indigestion issues.
Boil- 3 Mix four teaspoons of ginger juice, four teaspoons of honey and two teaspoons of lemon juice in three-fourths of a cup of water. And drink. This helps reduce your chances of catching a cold.

- Take fresh juice of one pomegranate and add one spoon of honey to it.
